Accommodation in New York can be hit and miss. One the one hand you can find yourself paying a fortune for pretty basic accommodation, but on the other hand you want to stay in a good area especially if you are not in the city for long. We stayed in the city for 5 nights and at first we really struggled to find suitable accommodation. We wanted to be close to the sights and we wanted to stay somewhere decent. Well that is exactly what we got with the Belvedere Hotel.
We arrived at the hotel really early. We had just stepped off the red eye from Las Vegas, and we were exhausted. Unfortunately we were too early to check in, but we did get to leave our bags so that helped. I think the lady at the check in desk felt a bit sorry for us, because she suggested we come back in a few hours, which was still before official check in time, and she would see if they had something available for us. We were so relieved to find out that they did.
The hotel room was actually really spacious. And the bed was so comfortable we fell asleep instantly! We had a room on the 14th floor which was brilliant because it meant we had an amazing view. The room was also air conditioned which you definitely need when visiting NYC especially in the summer.
We had all the basic amenities such as a wardrobe, a safe, and a mini bar. The only annoying thing was that Wifi was not included. We could have paid for it but it was cheaper for us to eat through our data plans instead.
The bathroom was small, but it did have a bath if you wanted to use it. And all toiletries like shampoo, shower gel, and soap were included and topped up throughout our stay.
Admittedly it wasn’t the most luxurious of rooms, and it certainly wasn’t very modern but it did the job, and we spent most of our time out exploring the city anyway.
The hotel is located in the Hells Kitchen part of Manhattan, and is only about a 5-10 minute walk from Times Square. We really loved walking through Times Square to get places and cherished the hustle and bustle of the city. The subway station is also only a short walk away, which made getting around really easy.
One thing I will say is that the hotel is located in a very touristy area. There are a lot of restaurants and bars here but we felt these were catered towards tourists and didn’t give you an insight into what New York is about. That being said though there were a lot of pizza places around that sold slices of cheese pizza and that was pretty New York.
We managed to find a really good deal on hotels.com. We paid just over £800 for 5 nights. If this was in the UK it would be super expensive but because it is New York it actually wasn’t bad. The good thing about hotels.com is that for every 10 nights you stay you get a free night.
The hotel had a vending machine which came in handy for those important midnight snacks. It also had a laundry facility where you could do your own washing. We really needed this after weeks of traveling. There is also a concierge desk. They were really helpful especially when it came time to book in certain tourist attractions.
We did really like this hotel. It is not the most modern but the location is great. We would recommend it for business travellers or first time visitors to New York, because of the location. To be honest though if we visited the city again, we would probably be looking to stay near Greenwich or the East Village only because you get to see more authentic New York and there is a far better food and drink selection.
