Checking In – Hotel Bergedorfer Hohe

As travel bloggers we have stayed at a lot of hotels. So we know finding a hotel that leaves a lasting impression on you is a rare thing. We stayed at the Hotel Bergedorfer Hohe for two nights, and it really gave an insight into what Hamburg is about. From the welcoming staff to the picturesque surrounds, we really got to see a different side of Hamburg that will stay with us for a long time.

If you are wondering if Hamburg is worth visiting here is an article to help you decide.

Getting There

We had actually been to Hamburg before, so this time around we wanted to go a little deeper and see more than just the town centre. The hotel is located in Bergedorf which is about a 20 minute S Bahn ride from Hamburg’s centre. You can then either walk (about 15/20 mins) or hop on a bus which stops right outside the hotel. We decided to walk because the moment we stepped off the train we were so enchanted by the neighbourhood.

About the area

There is actually quite a lot to see and do in Bergedorf. It is a beautiful part of Hamburg with a lot of places to go for a walk. There is also the medieval Bergedorf Castle which is now a museum with a lot of information on the history of Hamburg.

The coolest thing was that around this area we found one of the most enchanting Christmas Markets we had ever been to. Even walking to the hotel was scenic. There are a lot of grand houses, each with a lot of character and a story to tell.

Checking In

Hotel Bergedorfer Hohe

Once we arrived at the hotel we were greeted by the owner, a friendly German woman who welcomed us wholeheartedly. She showed us to our room, and provided us with information on where everything was that we needed during our stay. She was also kind enough to invite us to her birthday party which was taking place that evening, which we gratefully accepted.

The Room

Hotel Bergedorfer Hohe

My biggest thing with hotel rooms is cleanliness, and I could not fault this place at all. It was spotless. Our room was on the ground floor and was really spacious. We had a large wardrobe, TV, coffee maker, safe, and a very comfortable double bed. There was also a desk, as well as an armchair and small table. On this table was a copy of the newspaper and a small Christmas Tree, something that we thought was a nice personal touch.

Dave’s favourite thing was the fact we had a small packet of Haribo Gummi Bears on the pillows. I think it is fair to say they were devoured pretty quickly.

I should also note that the bathroom was also really spacious and very modern, with plenty of fresh towels.

Because our room was on the ground floor we could walk out into the garden. When the curtains in the room were open we had such a beautiful view of the autumn leaves falling from the trees.  I can imagine in the summer that this would be an amazing place to sit.

The thing that struck us was how homely the room was. We really felt comfortable from the moment we walked in.

The Amenities

The hotel has a very quaint bar, as well as a dining area for breakfast. We got to checkout the area on the first night when we were invited to the hotel owner’s birthday party. And so we spent the evening mixing with some of the locals and learnt so much about Hamburg and the hospitality of its residents. We also, with the help of some of the party guests, discovered Schnapps. I mean it would be rude not to right?

The really cool thing about the hotel bar is the sense of community. A lot of locals do visit and it gave us the chance to hear the untold stories of Hamburg by the people who actually live there. You really don’t get hotel bars like this, especially in the city.

Breakfast was included in our stay and so in the morning we sat at one of the immaculately set tables, whilst we dined on our continental breakfast. It was laid out buffet style so we could help ourselves to cold meat, fresh bread rolls, cheeses, fruit, and yoghurt just to name a few.

It was lovely and our wonderful host was there to greet us and offer us advice on what to do throughout our visit.

One thing that I should also add is that the hotel has a beautiful garden outside it. There is a beer garden that I can imagine would be lovely in the summer.

The Verdict

I cannot even begin to express how amazing our time at the hotel was, and as I mentioned above it was just so nice to see a different side of Hamburg. If you are looking for a more relaxed trip or if you have been to Hamburg before and you want to delve in a little deeper, then the Bergedorfer Hohe is the place for you.
